IP University Drops Rank Cap to Fill Unfilled Admission Seats

IP University removes rank capping for vacant seats after regular counselling, allowing lower-ranked candidates to compete through physical spot counselling as the university seeks to reduce unfilled seats.
The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, which is popularly referred to as IP University, abolishes the policy of capping ranks for admissions in vacant seats after the completion of the usual counselling process. This has been announced through the notice issued by the Delhi Directorate of Higher Education, making it possible for those with low ranks to get admission to vacant seats in different programs.
As per the old policy, there would be a cap on the closing rank for each program. No candidates whose ranks were above this cap could apply for admission despite there being vacancies in the program. The new policy lifts this barrier and gives a greater number of candidates a chance to join.

The change is made considering the large number of seats that go vacant at IP University and their affiliated colleges in each academic session. It has been found that in the last three academic sessions, over 29,000 seats were left vacant. The number of seats that go vacant in 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 respectively are over 11,000, 8,512 and 8,725. The new policy intends to increase the utilization of seats through competition amongst qualified lower ranked candidates.
In addition to this, the university implements physical spot counseling for vacant seats. Once the normal counseling procedure is over, the candidates who want admission for any vacant seat have to attend physically in the concerned college or the counseling center. The candidates who will attend physically will only be eligible for the daily merit list.
The physical counselling system is comparable to the approach taken at other big institutions in Delhi such as the Delhi Technological University, Netaji Subhas University of Technology, and Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women. It is aimed at ensuring that the process of filling up the vacant positions is done faster and in an objective way.

The official website of GGSIPU is continuously updating vacancy details of different programs and counselling schedules for the academic year 2026-27. Some recent updates include vacancy details for programs like BCA, BBA, B.Com and B.Tech along with offline and spot counselling schedule for some chosen programs.
The elimination of rank caps means that students who have been unable to apply due to not being in the closing ranks of their particular courses have a chance to join if there are still open seats. This process is likely to benefit both IP University and its affiliates in filling the open seats.
