US, Taiwan Strengthen Educational Cooperation

Taiwan has agreed to collaborate with America on content promoting artificial intelligence in ‘Mandarin education’ and ‘traditional Chinese corpus,’ in a bid to shield ‘Mandarin education’ from authoritarian censorship.

Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chen Ming-chi, pointed this out after the fifth high-level dialogue of the US-Taiwan Education Initiative on Tuesday in Taipei.

The most significant US individuals were represented by Mr. Robert Koepcke, who was the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Regional Security Policy and Public Diplomacy, and Ingrid Larson, who was the Managing Director for the American Institute in Taiwan's Washington Office.

Chen pointed out that Darren Beattie, who was a senior department official in the US Department of State, had shown maximum support for the academic relationship between the nations.

Launched in 2020, during the Trump administration, the US-Taiwan Education Initiative has become an important aspect of the US-Taiwan bilateral relationship.

This dialogue established a foundation for the development of deeper educational cooperation between both parties in President Trump’s second term. Both parties agreed to work together to develop talent training pathways and improve Mandarin education, as well as promote cross-culture exchange.

In light of considerable anniversaries this year the 250th anniversary of US independence and Taiwan's first direct presidential election Chen said Taiwan would work with the US on expanding AI uses in Mandarin teaching and creating trustworthy Chinese corpora on large language models.

This is in a way that contributes to global language technology standards while preserving the freedom of Mandarin education.

In addition to this, the Taiwanese government has established 64 centers of Mandarin Chinese learning in the US. This shall enhance the relationship and provide immense opportunity for the people. Cooperation in key areas like semiconductors, AI, and quantum sciences has seen an investment of over $4 million in 42 projects over the past two years alone.
