Exploring Holistic Approaches to Higher Education beyond Classroom

In a recent interaction with Higher Education Review Magazine, Swami Raju shared his views and thoughts pertaining to exploring holistic approaches to Higher Education. He holds more than 35 years of working experience. Currently, Mr. Raju is working as Principal. Before this, he was a Registrar at the Advanced Institute for Research on Religion and Culture (PG and Doctoral Studies). He authored 19 published books and many scholarly articles.


In your opinion, what are the main challenges in integrating social transformation into higher education, and how would you address them?

In contemporary higher education in India, numerous challenges have emerged, presenting obstacles to both institutions and aspiring students. One significant issue lies in the escalating demand for higher education, leading to a strain on universities and institutions to enhance their infrastructure and academic offerings. Furthermore, a critical concern is the inadequacy of courses to address societal issues such as economic problems, social inequalities, and various discriminations, thereby falling short of providing a transformative educational experience.

Insufficient infrastructure exacerbates the challenges, as some educational entities lack essential resources such as classrooms, libraries, and laboratories, hindering effective student training. The shortage of qualified faculty further compounds the problem, impacting the quality of education and the overall development of students. Additionally, the commercialization of education poses a major threat, with institutions prioritizing financial gains over educational objectives, making it difficult for candidates from rural areas or with limited financial means to access quality education. Outdated curriculums exacerbate the situation, as many universities neglect to revise their educational content by evolving societal needs. Overall, a holistic transformation is imperative to ensure the effectiveness and relevance of higher education in India.

In the context of globalization, how can higher education institutions prepare students to be socially responsible global citizens?

Fostering socially responsible global citizens has become increasingly crucial in the context of globalization. The world has transformed into a global village, facilitated by rapid technological and scientific advancements, shrinking time and space. As a result, students now have greater access to international universities, necessitating a higher level of education that prepares them for globalized situations. Additionally, intercultural understanding and empathy play a pivotal role in shaping global citizens. Global education exposes students to diverse cultures, perspectives, and global issues, fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity and promoting unity among different cultures. Furthermore, critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential at the higher education level, enabling students to analyze and address global issues critically. Emphasizing the rights and responsibilities of individuals in a global context, higher education institutions contribute to the development of responsible citizens. Effective communication and collaboration skills are imperative in the globalized world, helping students navigate diverse cultural landscapes and fostering positive social, ethical, and spiritual relationships. Finally, preparation for a globalized workforce should be a key focus for institutions, with promoting communication skills, adaptability, and the ability to work in diverse cultural settings. Addressing these aspects during university education can aid students to seamlessly integrate into international environments, fostering meaningful social interactions and ethical relationships across cultures.

What strategies would be employed to ensure that students from diverse backgrounds feel equally represented and valued within the academic community?

The prevalence of racial discrimination in various institutions is adversely affecting students and the overall equality within the educational landscape alike. To eradicate discriminatory practices based on race, gender, caste, and color in education, it is imperative for Indian educational institutions to adopt standardized policies. Conscious efforts are needed to ensure that all students receive equal treatment and opportunities, irrespective of their economic status, caste, or gender. This includes providing encouragement for research projects and fostering a supportive environment for candidates to thrive. Distance education institutions must prioritize justice and equality within their campuses, addressing instances where some students feel neglected or unjustly treated in terms of grading, credit allocation, and responsibilities. A pressing issue in higher education institutions is the prevalence of ragging, which creates a challenging environment for students and impacts institutional reputation. Governments need to intervene to curb such misbehavior and ensure a safe educational environment. Additionally, addressing gender misdemeanors is crucial, as more female candidates are now pursuing higher education. Ensuring respect and equality at all levels is paramount for the holistic development of students in the Indian higher education system.

In your view, how does technology play a role in promoting social transformation within the higher education landscape?

The integration of technology, particularly through digital learning platforms, has revolutionized the educational landscape. It facilitates virtual exchange, offers online resources, and connects students globally, fostering a collaborative learning environment. In the wake of the pandemic, there has been a significant surge in online courses and distance education programs, making education more accessible and flexible. The widespread adoption of technology in education is evident in the development of online courses and the use of digital platforms. However, challenges persist, particularly in rural areas where limited internet accessibility hampers the learning experience. Many students in these regions face difficulties accessing online resources due to a lack of internet connectivity and the necessary digital tools.

To address this digital divide, governments must prioritize providing internet access and essential devices to learners in rural areas. It is imperative for universities to recognize the transformative potential of technology and actively work towards inclusivity, enabling all students to enhance their academic standards and contribute to social progress.

In your opinion, how does the institution promote diversity and inclusion among students and faculty?

At the higher education level, it is crucial for management to prioritize diversity in faculty selection, ensuring representation from various backgrounds, both male and female. Qualified faculties should be chosen from diverse communities, including marginalized groups such as Dalits, Adivasis, and women, fostering equality in higher education. The emphasis on inclusivity should extend beyond admissions, actively creating an environment where all individuals feel a sense of belonging.

To achieve inclusive education, there must be a concerted effort to eliminate gender and caste discrimination during the admissions process. Students should be instilled with a sense of belonging, discourage prejudiced attitudes, and promote unity within the educational community. Faculty and management bear the responsibility of maintaining inclusivity by fostering a diverse, open, and welcoming environment. It is essential to address any psychological discomfort or feelings of unsafety that minority students may experience, ensuring a supportive and secure learning environment for all. This approach is fundamental for transforming education into an inclusive community that thrives on diversity and equality.
