Delhi University Offers Exit Option After 3 Years Under FYUP
- DU students can now graduate after 3 years under FYUP as per NEP 2020.
- Eligible students must apply via the official university portal.
- The move promotes academic flexibility but raises concerns over readiness.
Delhi University has declared that students participating in the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) can now leave after finishing three years with a degree, following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
As per the official announcement released on Thursday, students who finish six semesters within the UG Curriculum Framework 2022 qualify to graduate with a three-year degree—either a general degree for interdisciplinary programmes or an Honours degree for specific-discipline courses.
"Students interested in availing the above option can log in to the university’s student portal at lc.uod.ac.in and submit their intent through the designated online process," the notification reads.
It also recommended that students "carefully evaluate their academic and career goals" and seek guidance from teachers and mentors before choosing the early departure.
The action occurs as Delhi University prepares to initiate the fourth and last year of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) this August. Launched under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the FYUP lengthens undergraduate programs from three years to four, providing various entry and exit options. Students can obtain a certificate, diploma, or degree upon finishing one, two, or three years, respectively, with the fourth year focused on research specialization.

While the new framework seeks to improve adaptability and academic rigor, it has also sparked worries regarding infrastructure constraints, an incomplete syllabus, and a lack of preparedness among institutions and faculty.
In an interview with PTI in May, Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh recognized these issues but maintained, "Facilities will be created. This is the first time the focus is on research, entrepreneurship and skill... this fourth year will be a game changer."
As the university progresses with the transition, the new exit option notification is anticipated to provide students with enhanced independence and understanding in managing their academic journeys within the changing landscape of higher education.
