Enriching a Global Form of Education

With a vision to emerge as a World - Class University in creating and disseminating knowledge, SRM University will be one of the first universities in the country to launch a satellite to the moon. The launch is scheduled by 2018 and will be useful for research on the rocks and their chemical composition on moon's surface. Such exemplary work can be performed by educational institute having firm vision to improve level of higher education. This leads to the research activities of SRM College of Engineering under which this mission has been procured. The institute has a very active research cell, centre of excellence and various research projects on nanotechnology, bio engineering, energy, environment, materials and embedded systems are being carried. Among the various research disciplines, pioneering work is being done in solar energy conversion and storage, SRM search engine and genomics and proteomics. Along with research the institute has been actively encouraging entrepreneurial ventures by the students and has already incubated and launched some in the market.

The institute's strong research base indicates a strong group of faculty members supporting the institution. The members are a dedicated group of faculty whose prime concern is scholarly and professional development of the students and themselves. All of them are well qualified and have expertise in their field of interest. SRM attributes these faculties as precious gems of the institute and encourages their knowledge and skill development. The institute sponsors them to publish papers, attend national and international conferences and visit reputed institutes abroad so that they imbibe the best practices. Over 3000 papers have been published in indexed journals in 2014-15 with average impact factors varying from 1.0 in SCOPUS to 2.51 in Web of Science scoring an H-index of 34. These members undergo a series of conferences, seminars, exchange programs and FDPs organized by various institutes and organizations having MoU with SRM. From 106 reputed international institutes spread across 23 countries and 12 collaborative ventures with leading Industries in India, these MoUs not only involves the faculty but the students of the institute are highly benefitted from the same.

The institute's Institute Industry Interaction Cell (IIIC) looks after such collaborations which help students in placement and internship. On being asked as to how these collaborations help the students in growing as whole, Dr. A. Parameswaran, Dean, IIIC, says, "International partnerships enable our students and partner institutions to meet, exchange ideas and work together on issues of contemporary social relevance, promoting cultural and economic integration and paving the way for a better tomorrow," as a result of which the campus witnesses very dynamic placement activities every year. To improve employability, students go through personality development course, online tests, group discussions and other skill development courses. Some of the major recruiters themselves conduct pre placement trainings such as Wipro, INFOSYS and Cognizant. According to placement records 91 percent of the students get placed in 350 organizations visiting the campus. Recruiters such as Larsen & Toubro, Texas Instruments, Fuji Xerox (Japan) visit the campus every year along with the previously mentioned major recruiters which offer average annual enumeration of Rs. 3.2 lakhs and highest of Rs. 32 lakhs.

The institute holds a total of seven school of engineering which houses 22 departments of engineering. The institute offers sprograms such as Mechanical, Automobile, Mechatronics, Aerospace, Genetic, Food Process Engineering to name a few. SRM College of Engineering has alumni strength of 30000 and is in relation with 12000. The alumni are made a part of the institutes progress by involving them in placement, internship, guest lectures and other such activities to interact with the new batch and provide them with first hand experiences and industrial exposure. The institute holds plan to further to strengthen its reputation through full implementation of outcome based education, hiring international faculty with stellar reputation, increase the number of courses offered by industry experts and adoption of best practices from all over the globe.
