Fostering Innovation: LNM Institute of Information Technology
Materializing the Creative Innovations
Developments in any field are the result of the constant and consistent advancement in research. Its evolution from tool development to automation has led to many dramatic changes in lifestyle and the society as a whole. Understanding the immense importance of research and innovations LNMIIT was founded by Mr. Laxmi Niwas Mittal in 2003 as a joint venture between Rajasthan Government and the Laxmi and Usha Mittal Foundation. It is the first university in Rajasthan in public-private partnership mode. It was granted Deemed-to-be University status in De Novo category under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 in 2006. The institute has recently been ranked 3rd amongst private universities in India and ranked 26th amongst more than 700 universities including IITs and NITs by an independent rating agency EDU RAND.
Commencing with a moderate batch of 29 students in 2003 in Communications and Computer Engineering, it has rapidly progressed to comprise five engineering disciplines with UG, PG and PhD programmes, and PG and PhD programmes in sciences and humanities. It now houses more 1300 students on a lush-gree 100-acre reseidential campus equiped with state-of-the-art academic and research infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, comfortable residential buildings and best-in-the-class sports facililites.
"We cherish the research culture at LNMIIT. We have developed HPC platform and GPU computing through internal funding. All the servers are enabled with latest software, so that people are able to carry out their research in the best possible way. We try to create better facilities for a good research environment from the research grant received from various funding agencies." says Dr. S.S. Gokhale, Director of LNMIIT.
Talking about the in-progress research in campus Dr. Gokhale says that there are two basic types of researches going on in campus: one, the academic research that results in research publications and so far more than 50 papers have been published from all the departments; and the other, externally funded research. The institute has several externally funded research projects going on in the campus right now. These projects are funded by agencies like UGC, CSIR, ITRA, DST, ICSSR, DIET and others.
In addition to the conventional labs for UG programs, the university has NI and TI labs and are in advanced stage of negotiation in setting up INTEL and CISCO labs. The university's TI lab has been able to develop a 'sign language translator' and the process of filing for the patent has been initiated. Providing new and high end technology in all departments is considered as an imperative by the university and that is possible because of the several collaborations they have with the renowned corporations.
Beyond their firm grounding in research work, they also have a training and placement cell that is dedicated solely to the training and placements of the students. Unlike, any other institution The LNM Institute of Technology has students handling all the ground work on placement related activities making them more efficient and independent. The university helps the students wherever required and support them through their various endeavours. The university provides one faculty advisor from each department and one assistant registrar of public relations for all the placement related activities. In the last consecutive years the university has had a placement record of above 90 percent and packages up to Rs. 25 lakhs.
Microsoft, Amazon and other organization take the university students every year for three-month to a semester long internship most often resulting in pre-placement offers based on students' performance. The university has a curriculum where the eligible students can fasttrack their credit courses and use the last semester for internships. In their curriculum they have IBM course packs of Big Data and Analytics, Cloud and Mobile Computing and Microsoft's GTSE project. They also bring in experts from HCL, SAP and others from time to time. The University encourages and helps its students to go abroad for internships. ArcelorMittal facilitates a two-month internship at its Kazakhstan steel plant.
Apart from the academic activities, the university organises three fests over the weekends. These are: Plinth, a tech fest, Desportivos, a sports fest, and Vivacity, a cultural fest. All the fests are on a national level and many institutes participate in it. Scientists from different labs are invited for talks in the tech fest. These fests equip the students with managerial skills and help them focus on the specific areas.
With plans to set up centres of excellence, starting with the co-branded labs, the university has signed MoUs with other institutes like, IIT Kanpur, VNIT Nagpur and others for specific projects, and they intend to continue with this in a pro-active way. The university also plans on adding niche courses such as aerospace and avionics in its pool of courses in the future.
