Dr. R.K.Singh, Director, S. Manjit Singh Bhatti, Chairman, GNVS Institute of Management
Most institutes claim that many companies visit their campus and recruit a large number of students. Despite being only four years old, GNVS Institute of Management, Mumbai is an institute which does placement very differently. Although it tries to get as many companies to come to its campus for placing its students, the institute also sends plenty of its students with their CVs and certificates for interviews. "Out of the 25 companies only 7 companies have visited the campus for the placements and the remaining students have gone to various other companies for interviews after we approached them," says Dr. R.K.Singh, Director, GNVS Institute of Management. "This allows them to get out of their comfort zone and embrace the organization that they are applying to," he adds.
Located in Sion, Mumbai, the institute in its present academic year has already placed 60 percent of its students with an average pay package of Rs. 3.5 lakh per annum. "Our placement team is doing a really great job and working very hard. We have been able to impress big companies and banks such as State Bank of India, Wipro, Airtel, Vodafone, Future Group and others; who are recruiting our students," says Dr. Singh. By having a lot of one on one interaction with the industry, the institute has been able to build an impression upon them. This has further enhanced the relations with the industry which has therefore tried to augment its students with the necessary requirements which will give our students an edge over their competitors.
Utilizing the institute - industry relationship; GNVS Institute of Management has been able to get more and more visiting faculty members with the necessary industry experience to teach the students. As the visiting faculty members understand what the industry requires, they use more case studies, projects and assignments; thus helping the students to gain the better understanding. "Out of the entire visiting faculty members, five of them are directors of various companies," claims Singh. By observing the positive effect that the visiting faculty has on the students, the core faculty members have also started using a similar pedagogy. Various students such as Kirti Solanki and Fahad Khan mention that the faculty members ensure that they are able to develop the overall knowledge of the students and the faculties always answer the questions raised by the students in class.
Highlighting Holistic Development
While the GNVS Institute of Management focuses on increasing the knowledge of its students; it also provides them the opportunity to develop themselves through extracurricular activities. Students at the institute can utilize the well equipped sports room which includes indoor games like Snooker, Chess, Table-Tennis and Carrom-Board. With a one acre lush green land next to it, the institute provides students with the opportunities to play outdoor games like badminton, football, cricket. The institute also organizes and conducts Sports-Day which includes both the indoor as well as outdoor games.
"All the students are extremely happy that institute has started a youth festival program which includes Annual-Day Celebration, Cultural activities like Dance competition, Painting competition, Mad Ad Show, Fancy dress, Mono acting and Fashion Show," says Solanki, a student of GNVS. With all these competitions the students try to enjoy and have fun when they are not sitting along with books to study. To encourage the students to take part in more such cultural, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at the inter collegiate level; the institute has built a state of the art auditorium. The auditorium which has a seating capacity of 565 guests is equipped with refined acoustics and has all the latest equipment required for cultural events.
Inculcating Leadership within the curriculum
In order to develop better future managers the GNVS Institute of Management has started a Manager in Making (MIM) program. The program guides a student to acquire the necessary skill sets through various professional activities such as Communication skills, Brain-Storming sessions, Decision Making Discussions and Personality Development of the students. All students at GNVS Institute of Management are required to undergo Mock-interviews, grooming exercises and Counseling sessions, so that they are able to develop their overall personality. The institute through its institute-industry relations has invited several experienced professionals and speakers from the corporate to share their experiences in the industry.
"In Mumbai, the input quality of the students is deteriorating day by day. It is very disappointing to see them take MBA education so casually and still believe that they should have the guarantee of a job," opines Dr. Singh very disappointingly. He hopes that GNVS Institute of Management which intends to start a one year course in project management and Logistics and supply chain management and digital marketing options will be able to develop its students complete their personality and make them world class leaders fit enough to lead the country's top enterprises.
