HBS: Promoting Student Entrepreneurship

Looking at the recent low point that the Indian job market has gone to; many graduates are starting their own ventures. Incidentally there has been a rise in the number of startups by students who are still pursuing their courses. Hyderabad Business School (HBS) which is part of the GITAM University facilitates the establishment of startups by the students. CrazyHeadS, HMD Cube and E2P Technologies are a few such examples where students of the institute have started their own companies.

"I would someday like to start my own business with all the skills that I have acquired in my time with the institute and the Center for Career Management Services (CCMS)," says Kiran Kumar, a 2nd year student specializing in Finance who has got placed in Deloitte. The CCMS, established by the institute, noticed that many of the students were unsure upon which specializations to select as the program offers dual specialization. The CCMS while providing students placements and internships also ensures that students are provided the necessary training after doing a competency mapping and writing an MBTI test. "I was able to understand that I was best suited for a finance job with the help of the competency mapping and MBTI test conducted by the CCMS," says Kiran.

"The CCMS guides the students studying at HBS to secure internships with companies thus helping them complete their projects," says Prof. S.S. Prasada Rao, Director of HBS. There are two types of projects - Minor and Major projects. The minor project is an internship spanning two to three months where students work on a specific project and compile a report which is then graded. The major project on the other hand is where a student after the completion of the 5th trimester has to work in a company for the entire sixth trimester.

If a company is impressed with the students interning with them, they are offered jobs which they can join on completion of the course. Due to this process and with close relations that the CCMS of Hyderabad Business School and GITAM University have with the industry, the institute has been able to place most of the students in reputed companies such as Google, Deloitte, Infosys, Microsoft, Dr. Reddy's Lab, Aurobindo Pharma, Yes Bank, ITC Limited and many more. The institute has also been able to achieve almost 100 percent placement. Students who also pursue their internships with entrepreneurs are trained to travel with them thus helping them to understand the important details in becoming an entrepreneur. This further enhances the opportunity of becoming a partner of the organization their interning with.

Involving Industry Experts is a Massive Benefit

By recruiting industry experienced people as faculty along with the existing qualified academicians, students are able to have a more practical understanding of the subjects and can provide better solutions to the problems. "The MBA program should be more of a training program than an academic program and therefore, more industry experts have been involved in the delivery of content," emphasizes Prof. Rao.

Despite having 25 percent of their faculty who have more than 15 years of industry expertise, the institute also ensures that 90 percent of the remaining faculty members have PhD as a minimum qualification. The industry experienced faculty members are people who work at the two tech parks located near GITAM University. Most of the subjects offered in the Operations and Supply Chain specialization which has the maximum traction are taught by industry experienced faculty who help students with their specializations. The industry experts teaching these subjects are from the

Pharma, IT, Manufacturing and Consulting sectors.

Promoting Holistic Development

Students studying at Hyderabad Business School participate in multiple clubs such as Human Resource, Marketing, Research and Innovation, Media, Sports and various others. The institute which shares various other recreational facilities with the university also encourages the students to utilize them to be holistically developed. Students can play various outdoor and indoor sports such as basketball, cricket, football, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and several other sports. The Institute encourages its students to take part in competitions it conducts and the competitions conducted by other institutes and universities thus helping them gain confidence. For the past two years, the institute has taken part and won the Campaign for a Cause event, conducted by IIM-Ahmadabad at their flagship fest 'CONFLUENCE'. "Our institute provided us with the guidance and training to win the event and I'm proud to be part of the winning team," says Kiran.

By promoting holistic development and with the involvement of industry experts along with the existing academicians, Hyderabad Business School hopes to keep churning out more entrepreneurs. The institute also hopes to achieve its vision of becoming one among the best institutes in Global Management Education, Research, Training and Consultancy in the near future.
