Industry Collaborations: SJC Institute of Technology
Working towards Societal Empowerment Since 1986
SJC Institute of Technology managed by Sri Adichunchanagiri Shikshana Trust, that runs 485 institutions all over the country, has been imparting high quality technical education since the establishment in 1986. Today, with all the departments being approved as centers of excellence, the institute conducts numerous research projects sponsored by various government agencies as well as industries. \'Water Quality Index for Groundwater of Chickballapur Town,\' \'Design and Development of Solar Wind Grid Connected Power Plant for Roof Top Application\' and \'Privacy Preserving Storage Retrieval and Monitoring Health Information using Hybrid Cloud Architecture,\' are some of the other relevant projects undertaken by the students and faculty members of SJCIT. \"With more than 20 PhD holders and close to 30 faculty members pursuing PhD here, research is a major component of SJCIT. Along with that, we have tied-up with many corporate companies to ensure that our students are being trained according to current industrial requirements,\" says Dr. Gowda.
Walking miles in the dead of the night just to switch on an irrigation pumpwhen the power comes on is a nightmare for farmers across the country, but not for those who are working in the agricultural lands of Chickballapur District in Karnataka. Students from SJC Institute of Technology (SJCIT), Chickaballapur\'s one of the oldest and reputed engineering college, have developed a device that farmers can remotely operate from anywhere to switch on their pumps placed in their fields. Developed at SJCIT\'s research center under the guidance of highly experienced faculty members, the device provides solutions to many issues facing an average farmer, which include water wastage, traveling long distances through difficult terrains just to operate the pumps, encountering snakes and other dangers en route, erratic power supply, motor/starter damage and fuel. The device also has an additional feature to turn off the irrigation system after sensing the rainfall using a moisture sensor. \"Our large chunk of students comes from the nearby areas and they know the problems their neighbors face. Hence, we have undertaken many projects of local relevance to help the communities living in the surrounding areas,\" says Dr. T. Munikenche Gowda, Principal, SJCIT.
A unique concept of HR
To impart education that is focused on the latest trends in the industry, the institute has established Department of HRD headed by Prof. Gurucharan Singh, an industry veteran who has more than 33 years of collective experience in industry as well as training and placements. Under the leadership of Prof. Gurucharan Singh, the Department of HRD has been progressively imparting training to the students, right from the first semester with focus on Industry readiness. While, the department conducts programs like specialized vacational training and regular skill development courses inside the campus, they have signed MoUs with corporate biggies like TCS, EMC, Jindal Aluminium and Bosch where experts from these companies come and train students on relevant technological skills. As a result of such dedicated efforts, more than 40 corporate companies visit SJCIT campus on yearly basis and recruit over 70 percent of the eligible candidates.
Today, 29 year old SJCIT has large alumni strength with people from different walks of life. Ravindra (IAS), Archana Bhat (IAF (VRS)), Bharadwaj (Indian Army) and Harshavardhan (Entrepreneur) are few such notable alumni members of SJCIT who have taken a different path after their engineering studies. Dr. Gowda who has been associated with the institute since inception, says, \"We are not only striving toward making technocrats here. We recognize the individual\'s skills and provide the right platform for grooming. This has resulted in creating an alumni base of people working in different fields.\" Apart from providing necessary infrastructure to promote extracurricular skills of students, the management encourages student-driven clubs to support different aspirations such as entrepreneurship, social service and so on. Engineers for Defense (EFD), Peopleware Club and Innovative Town are some the active student-driven clubs at SJCIT.
While the institute organizes alumni meets at the campus to inspire the present generation of students, the management has well-crafted plans for the upcoming years.\"The future of SJCIT is very clear. As an immediate plan, we would be establishing a dedicated academic block for Aeronautical Engineering. We are also very keen to strengthen our research abilities and industry relations. Indeed, a curriculum that fosters research and imparts latest industrial skills is the way forward,\" concludes Dr. Gowda.
Dr. T. Munikenche Gowda, Principal
A PhD holder from Bangalore University, Dr. T. Munikenche Gowda has been associated with SJCIT since the inception in 1986, published National and International Technical papers in reputed Journals and is Guiding Ph.D Students. During his journey with SJCIT, he has played an instrumental role in setting up various research centers in the campus. As a teacher, he is very keen on keeping the relations alive with his old students and hence he never misses any of the alumni meets.
