Enhancing Employability through Industrial Collaborations

Established in the year 2001, Rayat-Bahra Group from Punjab has 30, 000 students, 6000 employees, 60 institutes of Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Education, Hotel Management, Dental College, Nursing College, Super Specialty Hospital and Skill Development Centre. In its 16 years of existence in the higher education sector, the group has been highly successful in creating a world-class intellectual capital to help the students to do their level best in achieving knowledge and pursuing higher studies and research. Today, with two universities located at Mohali and Shimla, they attract large number of students from all over the country. At the core of the growing popularity among students and parents, we can evidently witness the influence of an industry-focused curriculum adopted by the university, which enables students to become ready to face the challenges of today's employment market.

"After the formal education at the classrooms, students should be able to apply what they have learnt from the textbook in a work environment. That is precisely why we provide them rigorous skill development trainings," declares, Dr. S.K Bansal, Vice Chancellor, Rayat-Bahra University. Understanding the fact that today's industries do not prefer spending much time or engage their resources to train the fresh graduates, the university has designed a Campus to Corporate program and ensures that the skills acquired by students are par with the current and future needs of the industry. The presence of an active Career and Placement Cell and India's one of biggest Skill Development Center at the campus have further enhanced the university's reputation among the cooperate giants as well as student communities. The skill development center at the university maintains MoUs with Volvo, Ford and Bosch in the automotive cluster and with TCS and Google in the IT sector besides various other training modules, thus creating 100 percent placement opportunities for the students.

The efforts put by the department of career development and placement cell is reflected by the results of the yearly placement drives. While, the 2015-16 placements are on the move, Wipro - India's one of the biggest campus recruiter - has already bagged 150 students from Rayat-Bahra in a single drive. Other than Wipro, the university hosts large number of corporate companies including Infosys, USD Global, IBM, Bosch, TCS, HCL and many more. "We are extremely focused transforming our student to professionals and we have been able to achieve that since our inception. However, creating a workforce is not our sole objective. We encourage our students to start their own ventures in their field of interest," says Dr. Bansal.

The university has established an Entrepreneurship Development Cell that aims at manifesting the latent entrepreneurial spirit of young students by organizing business plan workshops, seminars and various other annual flagship events centered on entrepreneurship. By establishing an Incubation Center supported by Department of Science and Technology and AICTE, the university not only shows the doors of opportunity but also equip students to walk through it. While, more than 200 students have started their own businesses and taken up self-employment, hundreds of students from Rayat-Bahra have already joined family businesses. "Many student startups are the results of our modern practices in education here. Our curriculum encourages widespread-area based innovations, research and developments, using the strength of our schools to provide a world-class learning experience and develop new ways to provide economies of scale and shared use of recourses," claims Dr. Bansal.

With externally funded projects from agencies such as AICTE and DST, the university ensures that the students remain occupied with the research projects under the guidance of highly experienced faculty members. The university also has collaborated with international educational establishments like Clemson State University and California State University, which allow the students to learn about the different cultures and get exposed to the outer world. While Rayat-Bahra University has begun taking huge steps towards providing students the best of everything, with a lot of optimism and enthusiasm Dr. Bansal considers the management's efforts as just the beginning of what is to be achieved in the future. "We plan to add more courses in the upcoming field such as Big Data, Business Analytics, Cloud computing in tune with the industry trends and we would be increasing the number of international collaborations. Our vision is to establish this university as hub of knowledge creation and learning," concludes Dr. Bansal.
