Dr. S. Subramanian, Vice Chancellor, Karpagam Academy of Higher Education
Private University - Nurturing Innovative Minds
With a vision of imparting quality education and inculcating novelty in the minds of the students, Karpagam Arts and Science College was founded in the year 1995 by Dr. R. Vasanthakumar, a polymath, a gold medallist in Electrical Engineering from Madras University. Far sighted even as a child, his plans of doing something in the field of education were motivated by his desire to do his part in the society. Upliftment of the underprivileged and the marginalised is one of the missions of the university. It was in 2008 after many years of relentless effort that the UGC granted the University status to them and it was renamed as Karpagam Academy of Higher Education (KAHE). "The University has 108 Ph.D holders in the current faculty pool and many more are pursuing their PhDs and all the faculty members are consistently contributing to SCOPUS indexed journals," says Dr. S. Subramanian, Vice Chancellor, KAHE.
The university has many on-going research programs in the campus and most of their research is focused on Life Sciences in which their main focal point is isolating the cure for diabetes and cancer from the plants in the Western Ghats. In the area of engineering, the topic for research seems to have sprung out straight from a popular Marvel comic series. The budding Bioengineering researchers are reviewing brain signals to find ways to manoeuvre the wheel chair through brain waves for patients suffering from paralysis. Led by Dr. S Subramanian who is known for his scholarship and academic administration, seven students have received their PhDs, and he is now guiding 7 more students towards their Doctorate. The university research departments have successfully filed for 33 patents and some of them are on the verge of commercialisation with funding mostly provided by the DBT and DST. "The university holds an immense pride in the research and development of the life sciences and bio-engineering areas. We shall soon come out with products useful to the mankind" adds Dr. S Subramanian.
With an inpregnable ground on research and development, the university plans on encouraging more number of students to apply for PhD programs and plans on providing them with fulltime scholarship facilities, to add more research labs, education and research collaboration with reputed international universities for research and education and also plans on having a minimum of 10 fulltime scholars in each department. Apart from the plans for research and development programs, the university also has plans to start P.G programs in inter-disciplinary areas and to start BVOC program in health sciences in association with medical hospitals.
The curriculum of the institution is frequently updated according to the trends and innovations in the market. Blooms taxonomy is the parameter used while designing the syllabus, teaching and evaluation. "We keep track of trends in research topics, trends in Industrial requirement and changes in internationally reputed Institutions. We also take feedback from the experts of the industry. Our Board of Studies has three external members from an academic institution, the Industry and an Alumni who help us in gaining a worthy comprehension of the needs of all the stakeholders," explains Dr. S. Subramanian.
Apart from offering several courses and excellent infrastructure the university also provides students with a surplus amount of job opportunities by providing variety of training programs to the students with the help of many MOUs they maintain with corporates such as CODISSIA, CII, and Infosys. The University maintains a good placement records from the beginning by having more than 90 corporates visiting the campus for recuitments.
Apart from job placements and overall development of the students through facilities such as clubs that are not confined to academics, value education and soft skill education, the university also displays its social responsibility through the exemplary performances in their research and development programs.
Having a modest and achievable future plans the university strives to overcome the challenges and move forward with their plans. Today the entire population is controlled and governed through technologies and technology has become the eye of the state and means of governance. The need of the hour is innovations in science and technology and KAHE is excelling in the same, with the rapid progress in their research and development, the university is soon to have the research hub known for its innovations.
