The Midas of Management Education

'A Management Institute of global standard, located in an obscure village,' is a phrase that defines Marian International Institute of Management (MIIM) situated in Kuttikanam, Kerala. Perhaps, being isolated from the humdrum, but being conducive for education, is one of the greatest advantages for students who are studying at MIIM as they have to undergo a rigorous two years of fully residential MBA program at the campus. "MIIM is blessed with scenic beauty of tea plantations surrounding it, a serene ambience away from the hustle and bustle of cities and a cool weather ideal for academic pursuits," says Rev. Dr. P. T. Joseph, Director, MIIM.

Established in the year 2011 by Catholic Diocese of Kanjirapally that runs several reputed Educational Institutions with National and International Accreditations, the management of MIIM has wider aspirations that justify the location that they chose to establish a postmodern management institute with state-of-the-art infrastructure. "As Kuttikanam is located in a very remote part of Kerala, people here do not have many opportunities to study professional courses such as MBA. We wanted to empower them by providing quality education in their locality," explains Rev. Dr. Joseph. Four years after its establishment, the institute that started with a mission to empower the local community has become one of the most sought after B-Schools for MBA aspirants in the state with approximately 500 candidates applying for 120 seats available at the institute. The reason for this demand is the institute's unmatched efforts to provide quality education by overcoming the challenges they face while running a management institute that is located far away from industries and business hubs.

"Unlike many other management institutes, a major part of our student population belong to nearby areas. We provide them with rigorous training, facilitated by the residential faculty members who polish and fine tune them into a management professionals with a clear business focus and intellectual discipline," says Rev. Dr. Joseph. Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, the institute starts training students much ahead of the other management institutes in the state. "This year, as per the MG University official confirmation, the MBA programs would start in the first week of October. However, we have started training our students from the second week of May," claims Rev. Dr. Joseph.

With a highly dedicated set of resident faculty from the best B-Schools who act as facilitators in making learning contemporary and global, the institute provides soft skills and communication training to students before they enter the actual MBA curriculum proposed by the university. While faculty members use their experience in the industry and academics to help students in achieving a judicious combination of academics and practical learning during the course period, the early induction to the program is highly beneficial as students from diverse backgrounds can gain necessary business acumen that will help them in showcasing better performance. Along with such intense practices, the institute has introduced strong industry participation to make the curriculum more relevant to the ongoing market trends.

Through Top Management Interaction Forum and Executive Interaction Programs, MIIM brings experts from the industry to connect with students. These programs catalyze the transformation of MIIM students to live wire corporate professionals. "The corporate interaction programs add value to the knowledge acquisition of aspiring professionals as we are living in an era where co-creation of values gain importance," opines Rev. Dr. Joseph. While the institute organizes industry visits often for students to understand the real time scenarios in the business world, people like Issac Joseph Kottukapilly (MD, Lunar Rubbers), Mendus Jacob (CEO, IPSR Solutions), Joseph Philip (Founder CEO, Skyline Builders), Dr. P.R. Chandramohanan (Senior Vice President, V.Guard Industries) and many more visit the campus to interact with students.

Despite being a newly established management institute, the collective efforts from management, faculty and industry professional have helped the institute to provide ample opportunities for students to find their dream job. Rev. Dr. Joseph says, "All our students are not ready to join the industry as they have other aspirations. Some of them want to join the family business while few other students want to run their own business. However, those who want placement, from a friendly suggestion to a corporate makeover, we assist their holistic development to ensure that we have shaped job-compatible talents, corporate-friendly professionals and employable resources." When the institute closed the 2014 placement process, 66 students grabbed a job of their choice with an average package of Rs. 2.4 lakhs per annum, which is a startling number considering the fact that only 70 students opted for placements from 120 intake. "As we are able to help students from nearby areas as well as the whole state by providing high quality academics and placement opportunities, we are happy with the way we are progressing today. For the next few years, we want to consolidate this process and make a quality benchmark so that we can expand into other fileds with a strong foundation," concludes Rev. Dr. Joseph.
