Prof. Gurucharan Singh: On a Mission to Balance the Scales of Employability
It is hard to believe that a man, who wholly manages the HRD departments in three engineering colleges and provides training at many other institutions, personally interacts with 30 students everyday and also constantly keeps tabs on their progress. Prof. Gurucharan Singh, the proud recipient of five national awards - the most recent one being the award for HR excellence, is a man who did not let success dim his view of what is important and has not changed his ways even after tasting success for many years. It was no surprise to us when he simply told us that, \"success is a continuous effort put everyday in whatever you do.\"
Prof. Singh is motivated by the desire to help the students from rural areas that are underprivileged in education and employment opportunities. He started his venture in Human Resource with HKBK College of Engineering and after spending two years at the institution Prof. Singh realized that placements are not taking place as expected. It was then he realized that an initiative is required to change the scenario. It was then that he came up with the idea of setting up a Department of Human Resource, which helped him turn around the placement records of the college. He setup the Department of Human Resource on the foundation of the belief that HR is not just about hiring people but also about helping them grow and constantly guiding them on their path.
He then went on to join SJBIT where he worked as the Director of HR, in the four years he spent there a lot of changes took place. Looking at the results he was producing, the BGS Group of Technical Institutions decided to give him the responsibility of taking care of the rural /semi-rural wing of the group of institutions. The rural / semi-rural wing of BGS Group consists of three colleges namely SJCIT, Chickballapur; BGSIT, Bellur Cross and AIT, Chikmagalur. In the past three years he has been instrumental in uplifting the placement records of these institutions. Under his guidance, the results improved from 10 percent to a hefty 70 percent today. A lot of other changes have also taken place at these institutions under his guidance, the quality of students has improved subsequently, the infrastructure has changed drastically and the overall ethos of the institutes has uplifted.
Starting from the scratch, Prof. Singh has successfully molded students from the rural areas into great personalities by focusing on the fundamentals of communication skills and personality development. \"The biggest problems are language, communication and presentation. We help them become fluent in English and bring them at par with their counterparts,\" explains Prof. Singh while explaining the challenges he faces on a daily basis.
Today with many big names visiting the campuses every year and most of the students working in MNCs, Prof. Singh reveals that nothing makes him happier than the fact that his hard work has paid off and the students who were reluctant to move out of their homes are now working abroad. \"It was very tough to bring in companies initially due to the location of the institutes but we eventually succeeded in attracting the industry players by improving the quality of students and the infrastructure,\" says Prof. Singh.
Prof. Singh is an ambitious man who is on a mission to improve the employability of students from the rural areas by empowering them with technical know-how. He also intends to deliver a series of motivational speeches for students in the near future. The lectures according to him would help the students gain more confidence and realize their true potential. Prof. Gurucharan Singh looks forward and believes that he is working towards a time when there is no distinction between the rural and urban students.
