Interdisciplinary research has emerged as a crucial part of the research landscape in recent years. While there are not many universities in India that have adopted this approach to make better a teaching-learning environment to students, Chennai based Hindustan University is making big strides in the higher education with its interdisciplinary curriculum, giving options for advanced learners to move across departments to learn interdisciplinary courses. "The transformation of higher education institutions is very important in today's world of dynamic technologies. Universities" main duty is towards solving some of humanity's most complex problems, not merely churning out potential employees. If education is about overcoming shared problems, we need to be taught to be collaborative because we will quickly realize that we cannot tackle them alone and that we need to cooperate with others," says Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, Hindustan University.

With a balanced mix of faculty members from the various backgrounds such as Research organizations like ISRO, DRDO, and leading academic institutions like IITs, IISC, NITs, NUS and NTU, the university has established 12 research centres in thrust areas of technology in interdisciplinary areas, providing students and research scholars an integrated approach. The curriculum of Hindustan University is designed in such a way that the students have opportunities to learn specializations in their field of engineering. "With our diversified faculty strength, we are able to offer 21 specializations in UG programs and 35 specializations in PG programs. We also offer industry collaborated courses partnering with IBM, Infosys, ADG Boeing, MATLAB, Yaskawa, SMC pneumatics and many more," claims Dr. Elizabeth.

Started in the year 1985, Hindustan College of Engineering, was conferred the "University Status" from the academic year 2008-09 under the name HITS (Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science).With an enviable academic excellence that has been maintain right from its inception, today, HITS is one of the most sought after engineering Institutions in Tamil Nadu, reputed for its highly qualified and experienced faculty and excellent infrastructural facilities for curricular and extracurricular activities. The HITS community comprises of students from all over India and Overseas including students hailing from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, France, Indonesia, Kenya, Korea, Liberia, Libya, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sudan, U.A.E, Thailand, Vietnam, USA and so on.

The university has accomplished its mission and its academic achievements are a testimony to the same. Over 950 HITS students have been placed in leading companies in India and abroad in the last 3 years, receiving placement offers from leading companies in India and Abroad. HITS also has active academic collaborations with over 60 International Organizations, which provide opportunities for International Exchange Programs for Faculty and Students, Summer and Study Abroad Programs, Internships, Joint Research Projects and Joint Conferences, Workshops and Seminars. "Here, the students will find a balanced mix of best of the pedagogy, curriculum, delivery and latest assessment techniques with the blend of rich academic ambience for cultivating research, projects, and competitions, industry interns, co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese is an Engineer by Profession & hails from Kerala. She is a graduate in Civil Engineering from Trivandrum Engineering College and a Post Graduate in Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani and has obtained a Ph.D in Education from Cosmopolitan University & Research Institute, USA.
