The institute was established in the year 1963 by Sree Siddaganga Education Society. The institute is located on a sprawling campus of 50 acres of lush green area in a congenial environment in Tumkur city on Bangalore – Pune National Highway (NH-4), 65kms from Bangalore.

SIT has the rare distinction of being selected by the National Project Implementation Unit (NPIU) for phase I and II of the World Bank funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP). The institute hopes to scale up and improve the quality of Technical Education and at the same time enhance the existing capacities of the institutions to become dynamic, demand-driven, quality conscious, efficient and responsive to rapid economic and technological developments.
The project focuses on strengthening institutions to produce high quality engineers for better employability and Scaling-up postgraduate education, demand-driven research and development and innovation. Establishing centres of excellence for focused applied research and enhancing institutional and system management effectiveness are the other objectives set by the SIT. The Institute has been able to start fulfilling the objectives through the funds provided by TEQIP by providing teaching and research assistantships for significantly increasing enrolment in existing and new masters' and doctoral programmes in engineering disciplines, enhancing of R&D and institutional consultancy activities, developing faculty and staff for improved competence. The institute has also been able to enhance interaction with the industry, implement institutional academic reforms and provide academic support for weak students with the funds provided by TEQIP.
Programs Offered:
SIT offers 12 Undergraduate programmes and 11 Postgraduate programmes in various engineering disciplines. In addition, MBA and MCA programmes are also being offered. 15 departments in the institute are recognised as Research Centres by VTU and offer research programmes leading to Ph.D.
Academic Resources
SIT has setup 99 labs to sieve innovation in its curriculum. More than 2000 computer systems are provided in 29 computer centres spread over all the departments. All the computer centres are networked with fiber optic cable/wireless bridge as backbone. Apart from the computer labs, SIT has a library with a collection of 106,442 volumes. The institute subscribes to 152 Technical Periodicals of which 42 are International Periodicals. The institute has ensured that the library has subscribed for the e-resources as mandated by AICTE, which can be accessed across the campus 24/7. The library also has memberships with reputed libraries such as the British Library, NAL Library, IIMB Library and CMTI Library.
Faculty
To teach the various subjects more professionally and at the same time provide a very good research ambience, the institute has 287 fulltime well qualified faculty members, out of which 77 are Ph.D. degree holders. At present, there are 91 research scholars pursuing their Ph.D in the research centres of various departments of the institute. Furthermore, in the spirit of innovation and research, eight faculty members along with 50 of our students from the various branches such as Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Instrumentation & Electronics, Telecommunication, Mechanical, Computer Science and Information Science are working on the designing, fabricating and launching of a PICO Satellite this year along with seven other engineering institutions in Karnataka.

Hostel Facilities:
SIT has 6 hostel blocks of which 4 are boys' hostels and 2 are girls' hostels. While the boys hostels are located inside the campus and the girls' hostels are located outside the campus in the nearby residential area. All- together the hostels can accommodate 1950 students. Bus facility is provided for girls staying in hostels, for commuting to the institute.
Clubs, Cultural Activities and Sports:
SIT has developed 8 acres of land exclusively for sports activity. Apart from building a 3500 seating capacity outdoor stadium to conduct sports activities like Cricket, Football, Hockey and Athletics with running track, the institute also has one gymnasium, two shuttle courts, two lawn tennis courts, two basket ball courts and two volley ball courts.
The institute conducts two annual cultural festivals SPANDANA and HALCYON during which a variety of extracurricular activities like English & Kannada debates, Quiz, essay writing, mimicry, dance and drama competitions are conducted for students. In addition, every year, each of the 12 Engineering departments organises one-day National Level Students' Technical Symposium.
Dr. M. N. Channabasappa, Director
Dr. Channabasappa is currently the Director of Siddaganga Institute of Technology and has a Ph.D in Applied Mathematics, specifically in Fluid Dynamics from IIT Delhi. Apart from having 60 years of experience in Teaching, he has also worked for one semester on a joint research project with Prof. R. Friedrich at the Technical University of Munich, Germany under re-invitation programme of DAAD (1984). Dr. Channabasappa has published and presented more than 20 research papers.
