Assam's Higher Education Growth Hinges on University-Industry Partnerships
In a notable endeavor toward the restructuring the higher educational setup in Assam, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya convened a meeting of the ‘Higher Education in Assam 2025’ committee at the Assam Administrative Staff College to strengthen University-Industry Collaboration. Brought by Raj Bhavan with the Department of Higher Education, the assembly saw the converging of a serious number of stakeholders such as Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, vice-chancellors, principals, and high profiled academicians.
The governor further stated that Initiatives need to be designed from a curriculum perspective where research work plays a vital role, while digital learning is also key to enable university-industry collaboration. The evolution of Assamese higher education from the Vedic age to the present scenario represents the mode of transition into an emerging learning hub. They must also find solutions to these problems through the use of modern teaching methodologies and excellent research.
Other pressing issues included the mismatch of the academic curriculum to the needs of the industries, making graduates unemployable. Governor Acharya called for more cooperation between the university and industry to eliminate this mismatch. He insisted that serious consideration be afforded industry-oriented curricula, vocational training, and internship schemes so as to endow students with proper practical skills and become job-ready.
The governor emphasized on inclusive education policies to allow access to students from all socio-economic levels. Initiatives should include international collaborations to improve education quality, targeted interventions to eliminate dropout rates, and the filling of vacancies in teaching positions to empower faculty.
