  • The program offers cohort-based learning, internships, and regional travel opportunities.
  • The “DU Korea” program in Seoul launches in spring 2027.

Drake University has announced plans to broaden its “faculty-led” study abroad programs beyond Europe to include South Korea, aiming to initiate offerings for students in the next two years.

The private university in Des Moines announced in a news release that it is creating a “DU Korea” study abroad initiative in Seoul, South Korea, to complement current DU programs located in Spain and England.

Developed alongside the education travel firm WorldStrides and Konkuk University, the initiative is set to start accepting students in Seoul in spring 2027. The announcement states that each program utilizes a cohort model, allowing Drake students to register for a shared course led by Drake faculty while completing their schedule with classes from the partner university.

“The cohort model embodies Drake’s mission to build a global perspective, and we’re thrilled to bring this successful approach to Seoul,” said Annique Kiel, Drake University chief global affairs officer and dean of global programs.

The announcement noted that students from every major can participate in the new study abroad program, with the first batch consisting of 10-20 enrollees. Kelley Ellis, the Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Drake University and an associate professor of practice in accounting, will oversee the cohort and instruct a course named “Business for Good” for students from both Drake and Konkuk University.

Alongside their studies, the announcement mentioned that students will travel to Busan and Tokyo and will have the chance to “incorporate a custom internship” into their semester overseas.

“When students live and learn in a vibrant capital city like Seoul with the support of a Drake faculty member, they gain a level of confidence that helps maximize their experience,” Kiel said in the release. “Students who participate in this program will not only have access to a world-class curriculum that sets them up for a breadth of careers but also the opportunity to further develop their intercultural competency and grow as responsible global citizens.”
