The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), through its Shaastra Magazine, is launching the National Internship, Placement Training, and Assessment (NIPTA) program.
This national program aims to develop a common yardstick for assessing student's readiness for internships and jobs, through structured training and a common assessment of employability skills. The IIT Madras NIPTA program sets a benchmark for IIT Madras student employability through structured training and assessment.
Designed for engineering and diploma students, NIPTA will offer an organized training program of 10 to 12 weeks on technical knowledge, mathematical aptitude, logical reasoning, and communication skills. The NIPTA initiative IIT aims to establish student employability standards India and reflects broader IIT Madras education reforms to democratize opportunities nationwide.
All members participating in the program will also have access to free online resources, including video lectures and practice questions. At the end of the training, students will take a three-hour, proctored assessment in person at various sites around India.

The opportunity is available to third- and fourth-year undergraduates pursuing engineering, newer engineering graduates, final-year diploma students, and diploma holders. The fee to sit the exam is nominal, but all training materials are available free of charge.
Each learner, subject to passing the exam, will receive a performance certificate from IIT Madras, which will provide clarity, orientation, and evidence of their skills and abilities. We will also share results with recruiters to facilitate the talent-finding exercise.
To further create opportunities, in early 2026 IIT Madras will also conduct a National Job and Internship Mela, either virtually or in person, connecting certified learners with potential employers.
The Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, inaugurated the endeavor at IIT Madras. IIT Madras' Director, Prof. V. Kamakoti, provided the vision for NIPTA, which aligns with the motto of IITM "IITM For All", aiming for opportunities to be made accessible to students from across the country. Prof. Srikanth Vedantam, Faculty in the Department of Medical Sciences and Technology and Chair of Shaastra's Editorial Board, articulated how NIPTA makes employability visible and quantifiable.
Shaastra, IIT Madras' monthly magazine, continues to engage with science, technology, and innovation, reflecting its place within discourse on India-centric science and technology, and making connection between those who seek to stage science and technology and those who need to know about them.
