IIT Madras Launches NIPTA to Standardise Employability

- IIT Madras launches NIPTA to provide training and standardized assessments for engineering and diploma students
- Program includes free training resources, a three-hour proctored evaluation, and evaluation of technical knowledge
- Assessment results will be shared with employers, and a National Job and Internship Mela in early 2026
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras, through its Shaastra Magazine, has launched a path-breaking initiative to improve employability for engineering and diploma students across the country. IIT Madras NIPTA launches the National Employability Benchmark to standardize internship readiness India and job readiness standardisation.
The program, called National Internship, Placement Training and Assessment (NIPTA), will offer structured training followed by a common assessment, developing a national standard for internship and job readiness. This initiative enhances student employability India through IIT Madras initiatives, offering higher education India students employability assessment, skill development India, and comprehensive career readiness programs.
The objective of NIPTA is to provide students with required skills and a credible metric of employability. IIT Madras will share assessment data with recruiters and conduct a National Job and Internship Mela, virtually or in-person, by early 2026 to connect assessed students with employers.
The initiative was officially launched by Dharmendra Pradhan, Education Minister, Government of India at the IIT Madras campus.

"With several thousands of students aspiring to take internships and subsequently placements in different organisations, the NIPTA initiative is very timely. It also aligns with the Institute’s motto of ‘IITM For All’, wherein we aspire to democratise opportunities for all students of our country through this Portal", stated Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.
"NIPTA represents a major step forward in making employability measurable and transparent. With this initiative, IIT Madras is committed to empowering students nationwide to hone their skills and obtain a standardised credential to find the best internship and employment opportunities", added Prof. Srikanth Vedantam, Faculty, Department of Medical Sciences and Technology and Editorial Board Chair of IITM Shaastra Magazine.
The program includes free training resources such as video lectures and sample questions. Students only pay a nominal fee for the assessment. The preparation process leads to a three-hour, proctored assessment at centers across the country. It is aimed at third- and/or final-year engineering students, engineering graduates, final-year diploma students, and diploma holders.
The assessment includes Technical Knowledge (based on the individual's specific branch), Mathematical Aptitude, Logical Reasoning and Communication Skills. After taking the assessment, participants receive a performance-based certificate from IIT Madras that serves as a transparent and credible benchmark to reflect their skills.
This affords students the ability to assess themselves relative to their peers and identify improvement opportunities, while allowing recruiters to objectively evaluate a potential candidate's overall skills relatively. NIPTA is significant step toward standardizing the employability assessment in India and linking what students learn in the classroom to what companies expect.
