  • The addition of 41 new medical colleges increases the total institutions to 816.
  • Around 5,000 new PG seats expected, raising the total to 67,000 nationwide.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned 10,650 new MBBS seats for the 2024-25 academic year. This rise is a component of a larger plan to improve the accessibility of medical education in India. The total number of medical institutions in the country has increased to 816 with the addition of 41 new medical colleges.

NMC Chief Dr. Abhijat Sheth stated that from the 170 applications submitted for increasing undergraduate (UG) seats - 41 from public colleges and 129 from private colleges - a total of 10,650 MBBS seats have been sanctioned.

Consequently, the total number of MBBS seats will reach 137,600 for the 2024-25 academic year, encompassing seats in Institutes of National Importance (INI).

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has obtained more than 3,500 applications for new and renewed postgraduate (PG) positions. Dr. Sheth indicated that the commission expects an addition of around 5,000 PG seats, raising the total to 67,000 PG seats across the country.

Despite experiencing some setbacks in the final approval process and counseling, officials have guaranteed that these steps will be finished within the set timelines. A schedule outlining the timeline for accreditation, assessments, and seat matrix approvals for the upcoming academic year will be announced shortly. Moreover, it is expected that the application portal for 2025-26 will open in early November.

To enhance the quality of medical education, Dr. Sheth disclosed that the National Medical Commission (NMC) is thinking about integrating clinical research into the standard medical curriculum. Initiatives are in progress to forge collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) focused on improving research facilities and promoting clinical research in medical education.

The NMC’s initiatives are regarded as a significant improvement in boosting the nation’s medical education capacity, aligning with the government’s objective of enlarging healthcare infrastructure and addressing the increasing demand for medical practitioners.
