OpenAI Launches ‘Study Mode’ in ChatGPT to Aid Students
- OpenAI launches Study Mode to promote critical thinking in students.
- Feature uses Socratic questioning, self-reflection, and adaptive feedback.
- Now available on all ChatGPT plans, with Edu rollout coming soon.
OpenAI introduced Study Mode, a new ChatGPT feature aimed at enhancing students' critical thinking abilities. Instead of providing straightforward answers, the feature encourages learners to interact more thoroughly with educational material by using engaging questions, structured explanations, and memory-based feedback.
Study Mode is now accessible to logged-in users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. OpenAI announced that it will launch the feature for Edu subscribers, mainly students utilizing ChatGPT via institution-wide licenses in the next few weeks. The rollout is part of the organization’s larger effort to rebrand ChatGPT as an educational resource instead of a shortcut for assignments.
The innovative mode integrates methods such as Socratic questioning and self-reflection prompts, motivating users to tackle challenges rather than depending on quick fixes. Responses are divided into well-organized sections that facilitate the comprehension of intricate content.
Learners get tailored support according to their earlier chat performance, using knowledge assessments such as quizzes and open-ended inquiries to enhance their understanding.
The organization recognized that the existing iteration of Study Mode relies on tailored system instructions and might exhibit certain inconsistencies between sessions. Nonetheless, OpenAI intends to enhance the experience according to student feedback prior to incorporating these behaviors into its primary AI models.

The launch occurs as schools explore how AI integrates into the classroom. A recent study highlighted the implications, showing that students who utilized ChatGPT for essay writing exhibited reduced brain activity in comparison to those using Google Search or no tool whatsoever. OpenAI expects that Study Mode will alleviate these issues by promoting enhanced involvement and understanding.
Study Mode mirrors a similar initiative by Anthropic, which launched a Learning Mode for its Claude chatbot in April. OpenAI characterizes its feature as the initial phase in a more extensive journey aimed at improving learning results via generative AI, with additional updates anticipated as feedback is gathered.
