IIT Madras Pravartak, ENAC to launch joint aviation safety manage

The IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has collaborated with France's renowned Lcole Nationale de Aviation Civile (ENAC) to introduce India's first Advanced Master's programme in Aviation Safety Management that is specifically designed for the swiftly growing civil aviation sector. The two, year course, which has been designed for employees who are in the middle, level and senior management such as the managers of the aviation operators and the regulatory bodies, intends to develop the managers' proficiency in safety management systems (SMS) so that they are able to meet the changes in regulations and also create a strong safety culture which goes beyond the technical side of the compliance only.

The programme is mixed learning with face, to, face lessons at the IIT Madras campus: one week every two months during the first year and one week every month during the second, taught by the ENAC staff who come from France. The program concludes with a six, month project or dissertation on solving the transport industrys challenges in the real world.

The key aspects of the study include not only the technical, related aspects of SMS, risk assessment, organizational safety performance but also emphasize the soft skills like communication, leadership, and assertiveness. As part of a program to improve safety education in the regions, Airbus is giving its full support to the initiative that is a direct response to the rapidly expanding Indian aviation market and the skilling requirements that need to be standardized.

The Director of IIT Madras, Prof. V. Kamakoti, after the meeting with ENACa safety, focused airline institution of over 70 yearssaid that the collaboration will have a positive impact on every passenger in India as it will help introduce uniform safety procedures in the midst of increasing travel volumes.

It is planned that the first group, only 30 students, will start the course in January 2025 (some sources indicate the beginning may be in March). Those interested in the program must have a bachelors degree and can send their applications until the middle of December 2024 through email or the dedicated portal.
