IGNOU Launches One-Year MA in Development Studies for FYUP Grads

IGNOU launches a one-year MA in Development Studies for FYUP and other four-year degree graduates, offering a 40-credit curriculum covering development theory, research, gender, CSR, urban development and related areas.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) introduces the one-year MA in Development Studies (MADVSOY) program from the academic year of July 2026. The postgraduate course is introduced by the university’s School of Extension and Development Studies (SOEDS) with a total of 40 credits and is meant for graduates.

Eligibility criteria for the program include graduates from the FYUP program from any stream. Also, those with a four-year or five-year graduation from any professional agriculture and allied streams can apply for the program. Students having a BE/BTech in any stream for four years can apply for the program too.

The MA program has been designed for a period of two semesters, with each semester having a total of 20 credits. The first semester will emphasise basic development theories and issues. The course modules under this semester are: Introduction to Development, Development Theories, Dynamics of Development and Issues and Challenges of Development.

The second semester places more stress on research and specialisation. “Research Methodology in Development Studies” is a mandatory subject, and the rest of the subjects are electives chosen by the student from various fields like Gender Studies, Development Planning and Communication, Training and Development, Local Self-Governance, Health and Development, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Urban Development and Projects.

According to IGNOU, the course is designed to incorporate theory along with research skills and practical applications that are pertinent for the development sector. The aim of the curriculum is to ensure that the students gain an insight into the issues pertaining to social and economic development, along with research skills.

The program is also a gateway for many different careers. Graduates have the option of seeking careers within government departments, NGOs, development organisations, CSR programs, and any other organisations that operate in the field of social and economic development.

The programme fee amounting to ₹8,000 makes this a more accessible postgraduate programme for qualified applicants. Those who wish to apply for the programme intake scheduled in July 2026 can send in their applications via the IGNOU online admission portal.

The program comes at a time when educational institutions are increasingly matching their postgraduate programs with multidisciplinary study and new employment fields.
